State Department of Labor and Industry Looks To Organize Its Phone Services

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG (CBS) -- Starting today, The State Department of Labor and Industry is asking people to observe a voluntary system to even out the call flow to its unemployment compensation service centers.

The new system is based on the last digit of your social security number.

Pennsylvania is asking folks who need to contact its unemployment compensation service centers with social security numbers than end in an odd number to call on Mondays, and folks with a social security number ending in an even number to wait until Tuesday to call.

Labor and Industry spokeswoman Theresa Elliott says, "we typically have two to three times the call volume on Monday. So this is just a way for us to provide better customer service to the people who are calling into the centers and to get them through the calls a little more quickly."

The odd-even recommendation does not apply to folks calling on Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays.
