Choosing A High School This Fall

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Choosing a high school for 8th graders is tough; this year it's harder than ever.

Dale Mezzacappa's article in the current issue of The Public School Notebook, is the place to start.

Mezzacappa explains that for the first time every 8th grader must complete the application process; the different categories of high school options - neighborhood, special admissions, citywide admissions and charter; the new common application; how to get help if schools don't have counselors; and how to visit a school.

On Saturday, November 16th, at the Armory at Drexel University, 33rd and Market Streets, 9am-5pm, the Philadelphia School Partnership is hosting an Expo with representatives and resources about all schools. Students should attend.

That visit and a copy of The Notebook, a free publication, which profiles 87 public high schools - size, admission requirements, programs, racial demographics, sports, location and SEPTA routes and more, will help ensure that students are making the right decisions by December 6th.
