Woman Critically Injured In Row Home Fire In Oxford Circle

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A woman is in critical condition after an early morning row home fire in the Oxford Circle section of Philadelphia.

It was 2:30 in the morning when firefighters were called to a two-story row home in the 6000 Summerdale Avenue, just off Oxford Avenue. Fire Captain Clifford Gilliam says there was fire on the first floor, heavy smoke on the second, and a victim inside.

"During the initial search (firefighters) found one adult female," Gilliam says. "She was rescued from the property."

Authorities say the 51-year-old victim suffered from cardiac arrest and was taken to Einstein Hospital.

The fire was quickly placed under control.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but Captain Gilliam says there was no working smoke alarm.

"You hear the fire commissioner say over and over, 'Your best line of defense is a working smoke alarm.'"
