was in full swing over the weekend.
, the science fiction thriller with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, debuted in first place at the box office, earning an estimated and impressive $55-million and establishing the biggest October opening in movie history.
It took in over $21-million on its second weekend.
In third was the new gambling thriller, Runner Runner
, with Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, with a total of just under $7–million.
rounded out the top five with $6-million and $4-million, respectively.
Although industry-wide totals were well below those of a year ago, Gravity
’s splashy showing made it a respectable fall weekend for the nation’s multiplexes.
