Instagram Begins Rolling Advertising Into Users' Feeds

By Melony Roy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In addition to the selfies, the food pics, and the homegrown videos, your Instagram feed may also soon begin sporting advertisements.

After months of saying it would experiment with advertising, Instagram has announced it will be inserting photo and video ads into the streams of its US members.

The Facebook-owned service says that the ads will start appearing over the next couple of months and will come from brands that you don't "follow."   They also say that this will "start slow."

The company says the advertisements will be made to feel as natural to Instagram as the photos and videos users already enjoy.   There will also be some ad controls so you will be able to hide an ad you don't like, just like on Facebook.

In its blog post, Instagram emphasized that you own your own photos and videos, and the introduction of advertising won't change that.
