Axalta Coatings Moving Its Corporate Headquarters to Philadelphia

By Steve Tawa

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A company that makes liquid and powder coatings for everything from cars and trains to refrigerators is moving its global headquarters to center city Philadelphia and its North American operations to Delaware County.

Axalta Coating Systems, which had been located in Wilmington, Del., now has its new corporate headquarters at 20th and Market Streets, in the Two Commerce Square building, bringing about 100 top jobs with it.

Later this month Axalta will shift its North American headquarters to Glen Mills, Pa., creating more than 200 new jobs.

"If it's got wheels on it, we paint it," says Axalta vice president Michael Crickenberger (top photo).

The City of Philadelphia provided incentives for the relocation.  Deputy mayor Alan Greenberger says the city is providing business tax relief for two years, and a $885,000 loan to help with capital costs.

"It's a loan tied to job creation," Greenberger explains.

Axalta's Eric Degenfelder says factors in Philadelphia's favor included its location, the building layout,  and the nearby universities as a source of engineering and business talent.
