Twitter Launches New Emergency Alerts System
NEW YORK, NY (CBS) – Social media site Twitter has launched a new alerts system that's meant to give users reliable information in case of a major emergency.
The system, simply called Twitter Alerts, launched on Wednesday, Sept. 25th.
The company says that users who sign up for the feature will receive a text notification anytime the Twitter Alerts account marks a tweet as a valid alert. Users who have Twitter for iPhone and Android will also receive a push notification.
On the actual Twitter site, tweets designated alerts will appear differently on the tweet timeline, with orange bells beneath the text of the tweet.
Twitter says that currently, numerous organizations in the U.S., Japan and Korea can send Twitter Alerts, but the service is expected to expand worldwide.
