Plaque Unveiled For Slain Philadelphia Police Officer Moses Walker, Jr.
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Philadelphia Police Department pays tribute to a fallen officer, murdered on his way home from work. Officer Moses Walker, Jr. may be gone, but city is insuring he will never be forgotten.
Hearts were heavy as a plaque bearing his name was unveiled outside the 22nd District where Moses Walker had been assigned. Mayor Michael Nutter helped steady his mother as she knelt down to kiss it. The 19-year-veteran was shot the morning of August 18th, 2012 as he was walking to a bus stop on Cecil B. Moore Avenue (see previous story). Two men tried to rob the 40-year-old. When he tried to apprehend them, he was shot.
"They asked him for money, he would have given it to them because that is man he was," said District Attorney Seth Williams.
Surveillance video led police to the suspects Rafael Jones and Chancier McFarland who will go on trial this May (see related story).
"It has been very hard, those cowards that took my son's life. It has caused a deep, deep wound in our family," said Wayne Lipscomb, the officer's mother.
Walker received the 279th honor awarded under the Hero Plaque Program.
"We want to demonstrate to all of these brave men and women in blue that should they be called upon to deliver the ultimate sacrifice, we will be there for their families," said Jimmy Binns, who started the Hero Plaque Program.
"Moses was a one of a kind person and I thank God for allowing me to be his Mom," said Lipscomb.
