PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Nearly 15,000 people gathered on Penn’s Landing to take part in a festival celebrating Mexican Independence Day on Sunday.

The festival isn’t just music and dancing.

“It’s a time of remembrance and celebration,” said a festival-goer.

“Miguel Hidalgo shouted to his people we do not have to be under the monarchy of Spain anymore lets fight for our freedom,” said another festival-goer.

The festival offered the crowd a chance to see everything — from performers doing traditional Aztec dances, to create and buy Mexican arts and crafts.

Mexico’s Independence Day is Monday, September 16th.
