Spotlight On Atlantic City During Miss America Pageant

By John McDevitt

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (CBS) - All eyes are on Atlantic City this weekend for the Miss America Pageant. It's back after a six-year absence. Many are hopeful that the national spotlight will help crown Atlantic City as a major tourist destination once again.

Beverly Sacks of Voorhees is so excited the Miss America pageant has returned to Atlantic City that she's singing about it.

"I grew up with it and that was part of the summer vacation, to go back to school and then come back on the weekend of Miss America and we miss it."

Her friend Donna Rolling picked up Miss America souvenirs for sale like t-shirts key chains and bumper stickers.

"I'm glad they brought this back you know to make tourism better".

Liza Cartmell is CEO of the non-profit Atlantic City Alliance promoting and marketing AC. She says the pageant will put Atlantic City back on the map.

"And so we think it's really just a great signal for the people who live here not just those who work here and come here to visit here that we are on our way back."
