Corbett Eyeing 'Pa-Based' Solution To Expanding Medicaid

By Tony Romeo

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - A spokeswoman says Governor Corbett is preparing to announce a proposed "Pennsylvania-based" solution to expansion of Medicaid and will discuss his ideas next week.

Governor Corbett has heretofore resisted calls to embrace an expansion of Medicaid, citing concerns about whether the federal government will remain committed to funding levels. Now, his spokeswoman Lynn Lawson says Corbett has some other ideas.

"Governor Corbett is committed to a Pennsylvania-based solution for providing quality, accessible health care to all Pennsylvanians. So next week he will be talking about specific ideas he has along those lines."

But while Lawson says federal funds would be involved, she insists what Corbett will propose does not constitute an expansion of Medicaid. She says the governor does not support growing an entitlement program and will continue push the federal government to approve reforms that he is seeking.
