UPDATE: I-495 Reopened After Crash Snarls Traffic In Wilmington; 1 Injured

WILMINGTON, Del., (CBS) – One person is hospitalized in critical condition after an accident on I-495 in Wilmington Monday afternoon.

The accident was reported at about 2:45 p.m. on I-495 northbound on the Christina River Bridge.

Delaware State Police say a truck was pulling a utility type trailer containing an unsecured fiberglass pickup truck bed liner. Police say the unsecured bed liner came out of the utility trailer and onto the roadway.

Troopers say the driver stopped and parked the truck in the left lane and got out of the vehicle with a passenger to retrieve it.

According to police, a vehicle struck the rear of the utility trailer. After the impact, the utility trailer rotated and struck the passenger on the roadway, who was then thrown about 10 feet in the air, landing on the left shoulder.

Troopers say the victim was flown to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.

I-495 northbound lanes were closed and I-495 southbound was restricted to one lane for about two and a half hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.

Troopers continue to investigate this crash with charges pending the conclusion of the investigation.
