Assault, Robbery Of 71-Year-Old Woman In Rittenhouse Square Caught On Tape

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Philadelphia Police Department is asking for the public's help capturing a suspect who was caught on tape assaulting and robbing a 71-year-old woman.

The incident happened shortly before 6 p.m. on Wednesday in the 2300 block of Manning Street in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood.

According to investigators, the 71-year-old victim was walking home from the Farmers Market in Rittenhouse when the attack happened.

Surveillance video captured the suspect riding a bike lurking behind the woman. As the victim made it halfway up the street, the suspect struck.

The suspect rode up behind the woman, grabbed her by the neck and spun her around, injuring the woman's right knee.

When the victim began to scream, the suspect ripped her pocketbook from her, which contained her driver's license, $65 in cash and several credit cards. The suspect then casually put the woman's pocketbook across his body and rode away.

The suspect is described as a black male, 6'0", approximately 20-years-of-age, with a muscular build and a medium-brown complexion. He was wearing a bright green t-shirt and tan shorts. He was riding a dark-colored bicycle.
