Fumo, Philly Democrat, Leaving US Prison At 70

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A once-towering state senator from Philadelphia is set to leave federal prison after serving four years for fraud.

Vincent Fumo, a Philadelphia Democrat, is heading to a city halfway house Tuesday for the next six months.

He's been incarcerated in Kentucky since his 2009 conviction for stealing $4.2 million from the state, a museum and a neighborhood improvement group.

The wealthy banker and lawyer had been a powerful figure in Pennsylvania politics for 30 years.

He is now 70, but his legal battles are far from over.

His three children are estranged, and the youngest has sued over Fumo's use of her trust fund.

The IRS is seeking millions, and federal prosecutors want more restitution than the $3.5 million he's paid.

Defense lawyer Dennis Cogan isn't commenting on Fumo's release.
