Local Veterans Honored At Party In Roxborough

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Local veterans were celebrated at a party in Roxborough Saturday.

Bruce Hoffman, president of the 21st Ward Veterans Association and organizer of the 5th annual tribute to hospitalized veterans in Gorgas Park, says he throws this annual event to show appreciation for the veterans that he feels have been forgotten.

"I see so many homeless veterans out here and it's just sad that they're forgotten. They do their service to their country, the government's reneged on their contracts, they're cutting back on VA benefits, they're drumming a lot of these career soldiers out right before their time is up to get a pension and it's just wrong," Hoffman explained.

To celebrate the vets, Hoffman brings together food and entertainment.

"We have a lot of volunteers coming out here. The Merion concert band, Old Academy Players has been here from the beginning, we now have the Savoy Company."

When asked what his main message was, Hoffman said "I want to say thank you to the veterans and tell the government get your act together and make sure you honor them."
