LAWRENCE Twp., N.J., (CBS) — Three people were killed after an accident involving a tractor trailer and a vehicle in Mercer County Friday night.

The crash happened just after 6:30 p.m. in Lawrence Township.

A SUV was crushed as it was wedged underneath a tractor trailer. Three people inside the SUV were killed, including a nine-year-old and a baby.

Police are trying to determine if the driver of the tractor trailer may have been making an illegal turn at the time of the crash.

The top half of the SUV was nearly sheared off by the force of the collision. Inside the SUV, there were five people. Three of them were killed, including a woman, a nine-year-old boy and a baby boy.

Rescuers worked quickly to save the two others trapped in the SUV.

It is believed that both vehicles were heading southbound on Route 1 when the driver of the tractor trailer may have may a left hand turn, effectively blocking the lane at the intersection of Darrah Lane.

There is a sign there indicating no left hand turns.

The 24-year-old father, who was the driver, and well as an eight-year-old female passenger were rushed to an area hospital where they are listed in stable condition.

Police are talking to the driver of the tractor trailer and investigators indicate the speed of the SUV may have played a role in the deadly crash.
