Transitioning Kids Back To School
By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The last day of July is here. I remember hating….that is not a strong enough word perhaps despising is better….despisng the last day of July when I was a child. This was a clear signal that summer was nearing a close and school was starting soon. It meant only another month of being off and playing all day.
As adults, I think we all would love a free month! But the next few weeks will be important for your kids. With the free time that summer presents for kids comes a lack of structure. This is actually a great thing and down time is healthy, but kids need to start to return to a more regular sleep schedule with more scheduled meals and even some reading to get back into the groove.
Start things slowly and build over the month. You don't want a dramatic one day transition on the first day of school.
