Police: Driver Killed After Swerving To Avoid Oncoming Vehicle On Kelly Drive, Plunging Into Schuylkill

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia Police say a driver travelling southbound on Kelly Drive swerved to avoid a northbound vehicle that crossed into her lanes, then lost control and crashed into the Schuylkill River. The driver of the vehicle died, her passenger was able to escape safely.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. Police say the passenger was able to free himself from the vehicle, swim to shore and call for help.

Police and rescue teams arrived on the scene and located the submerged Toyota and the body of the female driver. Her name has not been released, but police identify her as a woman in her twenties from Darby, Delaware County.

The passenger suffered only minor injuries.
