Postal Service Looking Into Eliminating Door-To-Door Delivery

By David Madden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The U.S. Postal Service continues to look for ways to cut costs these days. One of their options is changing the way in which many people get their mail.

They're trying to eliminate door-to-door delivery, at least in new construction, opting to set up cluster boxes instead.

"We are exploring scenarios to restructure our delivery operation for business customers, focusing on shopping malls, shopping centers which would include strip malls and business parks," local Postal Service spokeswoman Cathy Yarosky said.

Hopes are to shave $4.5 billion off the annual $30 billion cost of mail delivery nationwide.

How does this affect you? If you currently get your mail at your door that won't change, nor will curbside delivery. But if you move into a newly built townhome, don't be surprised to find a group mailboxes in the middle of the block.
