Communities Need Volunteers
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The AARP Bulletin reports that in the US, 10,000 people are turning 65 each day and that we are approaching a time when the number of people over 65 will outnumber those under 15.
More than 90% want to stay where they live.
Many people in that age group are retired and research has shown that volunteering even an hour a week is gratifying and helps change one's perspective. With Philadelphia having the highest poverty of the ten largest cities in the nation, volunteers are needed and can make a difference in people's lives, the volunteer and the receiver….even one hour a week.
In Philadelphia, the Mayor's Office of Engagement and Volunteer Service will assist in finding opportunities; being a senior companion, helping a student reach graduation goals, leading an after school club, or joining RSVP/Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
