EXETER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — A community is mourning the loss of a child after an 18-month-old girl was accidentally run over in Exeter Township.

It happened Sunday night at about 7:30 p.m. at the Exeter Friends Meeting House.

“Some children had been playing outside and an 18-month-old child had run out behind a car as it was backing up,” Sgt. Steve Schaeffer of the Exeter Police Department said.

Police say a man driving a Volvo station wagon ran over the child, who was identified by police as Evelyn Steinruck.

Church members sprang into action before police arrived, trying to help the toddler.

“The child was underneath the car, after the person backed up and church members lifted the car off of the child and pulled the child out from underneath,” Sgt. Schaeffer explained.

The 18-month-old was flown with her family to a local hospital where she later died.

Investigators say the driver will not face any charges.
