PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The stock market has been at, or near, record highs, but there are plenty of threatening clouds on the horizon and a financial consultant wants to put you in charge of your future.

Kimberly Foss says she grew up working class which may explain her career choice as a wealth manager.

She’s learned a thing or five over the last couple of decades, like her principles of investing: written goals, planning, commitment, assessment and flexibility.

“I just found there were five steps that were successful with my private practice and I wanted to put those in steps that are easy to follow for everybody out there, so they can have a choice when they decide to retire or just have a choice in life,” she says.

Foss has written Wealthy by Design: A Five Step Plan for Financial Security to help readers live the dream.

The starting point is always identifying what you need versus what you want.

She says every age group can benefit from her strategy; from young adults alerted to a lifetime of investing to the tweeners, those too young to retire but too old to start a new career.
