Runners Get "Down And Dirty" For A Good Cause

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - More than 5,000 participants came out to Fairmount Park on Saturday morning to race to help raise money for charity.

The Merrell Down & Dirty Obstacle Race 5 and 10K off-road courses filled with military-style obstacles let runners try a race that breaks off from the traditional run that most are used to.

"There's everything from cargo net climbs, to crawls through mud pits, to carrying rocks and sand bags. It's just the hardest workout people will ever do in their lives," this runner said.

The muddy off-road trails offered more than 20 obstacles and even young kids got to participate.

The event helped raise money for Operation Gratitude, a charity that sends personalized care packages to military personnel deployed in regions overseas.
