Philly Based Beer And Wine Website Expands To Include NYC Bars

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A locally-based website devoted exclusively to fine wine, craft beer and cocktails is celebrating its arrival in the Big Apple.

DrinkNation is an online magazine that focuses on the best of a city's drinking culture. Adam Schmidt, 31, launched it three years ago from a second floor loft in Old City as Drink Philly. Since then he has added a half-dozen other cities. New York is his most recent and most challenging addition.

"We've been wanting to expand to New York for a very long time but weren't sure how to do it," Schmidt said. "We finally figured out how to grapple such a large city."

That would be by limiting the amount of bars to 1,000.

"A lot of the cities that we're in don't have nearly as many bars, as many people as NY," he noted. "So what we decided to do is cover only the very best of the best."

Under the criteria of good wine, craft beer and cocktails along with food menus, specials and happy hours.

He says the feedback so far has been positive.

"We're finding that people that have lived there for years are finding bars on our website right in their own neighborhood that they never tried out because they never thought it was a good place or they just didn't know about it."
