Pathmark Preparing To Close 3 South Jersey Supermarkets in September

By Mike DeNardo

CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) -- Three Pathmark stores in South Jersey are closing for good.

Pathmark stores in Cherry Hill, Camden, and Edgewater Park are shutting their doors in September, putting 300 employees out of work.

That leaves only one Pathmark store in South Jersey, in Ventnor.

United Food and Commerical Workers Union Local 152 president Brian String says concessions from 13 locals helped parent company A&P emerge from bankruptcy in 2011, but it apparently wasn't enough.

"What we were led to believe is, a great deal of those savings were going to be to modernize the stores, make them more competitive," he tells KYW Newsradio, "certainly not close them as they have been doing for the last year and a half."

String says the 56 meatcutters, seafood and deli employees he represents may be able to find jobs at other Pathmark stores around the Delaware Valley.
