Tens Of Thousands Travel From Across Continent To Celebrate Independence Day In Philadelphia

By Jenn Bernstein

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It doesn't get more patriotic than Philadelphia's July 4th parade, right in the heart of one of our nation's most historic areas.

Thursday morning, Philadelphia's celebration showed off its rich history with some of the most important people that shaped our country making guest appearances.

William Penn, Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross and Abe Lincoln himself were part of the parade.

It also included all kinds of groups from all different cultures and countries, celebrating America's diversity.

"This is America and we love freedom, liberty and democracy!" said Mayor Michael Nutter as he walked in the parade.

The Uchoa family came all the way from Toronto to celebrate.

"Today is very beautiful!" said Adriano Uchoa.

Earlier on the Ben Franklin Parkway, musical artists like The Roots, Grace Potter and Ne-Yo were heard performing sound checks for Thursday night's big concert.

Later in the afternoon, tens of thousands descended on the area for a day-long celebration of music, food and fun.

"It's one of the best festivals for fourth of July! This is Philadelphia!" said Angelina Seward.
