Wawa Builds Giant Hoagie To Kick Off Welcome America Celebration

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Hundreds of folks gathered at the National Constitution Center during the wee small hours of the morning, to help build enough hoagies that have a combined weight heavier than a baby elephant. It's part of the Wawa Welcome America celebration.

The 15,000 hoagies are made from more than 500 pounds of ham, 1,000 pounds of provolone cheese and 2,000 pounds of sliced tomatoes. And that's just a few of the ingredients.

"In total weight will weigh more than 4.5 tons," says Laurie Bruce from Wawa.

She says starting at noon visitors to the Independence Visitors Center lawn will get a free hoagie as part of the event, but those aren't the only hungry mouths being fed.

"As a part of Hoagie Day, we are dedicating 5,000 of the first hoagies built to go to Philabundance. We want it to be Hoagie Day for everyone so we want to make sure everyone has hoagies."

This is the 21st year of Wawa Hoagie Day and the 18th year they've worked with Philabundance.
