Thousands Of Home Brewers Gather In Center City For Convention

By Paul Kurtz

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia is known for its vast assortment of craft beers, but, this weekend, home brewers are in the spotlight.

They've come from all over the country to share their knowledge of and passion for home brewed beer at the Center City Marriot for their annual convention.

"We have probably the largest gathering of home brewers ever. We got 3,400 home brewers here," says Convention Director Gary Glass.

For Dan Klingman and Peter Simms, the trip from Florida was like a pilgrimage.

"All part of the fun of being here is everybody enjoys brewing it, they like talking about, the whole experience. It's a lot of fun. They're 3,400 like-minded people," he says.

The convention also gives local clubs a chance to branch out.

Reporter: "What are you brewin'?"

"We have a couple different saissons, which is a nice light Belgian style. We have a nice trippel. There are a couple English beers, which are called sessions beers cause they're easy to drink and low in alcohol," says someone from the Mt. Airy Society of Home Brewers.

The convention runs through Sunday.
