SEPTA Riders Brace For Fare Hikes

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Stock up on tokens, SEPTA's rate hikes go into effect on Monday.

The tokens go up a quarter, to $1.80 on Monday. Cash fares jump from $2 to $2.25. Weekly transpass prices go from $22 to $24.50, and monthly transpasses now cost $92. Regional Rail fares are seeing jumps ranging from $0.25 to $2, and monthly trailpass prices have increased anywhere from $8.15.

All part of planned rate hikes from SEPTA, but riders say they're still feeling it.

"They're going to hurt big time," says one rider. "During a small depression, they're raising rates again."

This rider says it's a tough pill to swallow, "Hundreds of thousands of people ride buses and trains and can't hardly afford it as it is."

These increases were approved by the board back in May. While they go into effect Monday, old tokens will still be accepted.  You can see all the changes at SEPTA.org.
