Baby Revived After South Jersey Woman Gives Birth On Front Lawn

BARNEGAT, N.J. (AP) — Emergency responders resuscitated a newborn boy just moments after its mother gave birth on the front lawn of her southern New Jersey home.

Authorities say 21-year-old Elizabeth Whitehead of Barnegat apparently didn't realize she was pregnant when she went into labor late Tuesday morning. She thought she just had stomach problems.

The child, who appeared to be about three months premature, was not breathing and did not have pulse when police arrived on scene. But two officers performed CPR on the newborn, who eventually developed a stable heart rhythm and began breathing normally as he was taken to a hospital.

Relatives say the child appears to be doing well.

Whitehead was treated at a hospital and later released.
