Weekend Box Office Report: Where A Prequel Scared Away The Competion

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  --  Monsters University was a monster at the box office as the strong start to the summer movie season continued.
The prequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc. scared up an estimated $82-million on its debut weekend for a formidable first-place finish.
The runner-up was the weekend's other new mainstream release, the zombie thriller, World War Z, starring Brad Pitt.
It opened with an impressive weekend total of $66–million, creating quite a one-two punch at the box office.
That dropped last weekend's leader, Man of Steel, to third place, as it took in an additional $41-million in its second weekend of release.
Rounding out the top five were the holdovers This Is the End and Now You See Me with $13-million and $8-million, respectively.
Overall, industry-wide totals were through the roof, a nearly unprecedented fifty percent higher than those of a year ago.
