Cyclist In Critical Condition After Being Impaled On Fence In Fairmount Park

By Jim Melwert

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Authorities are working to identify a bicyclist who crashed into a fence near MLK Drive early Thursday morning.

It happened around 1:30 this morning, on Black Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Fairmount Park.

Police say it appears the 46-year-old cyclist lost control of his bike, crashed and impaled himself on a metal fence.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he is listed in critical condition.

Black Road is a windy, side road that goes downhill to MLK Drive from Parkside Avenue by Memorial Hall and the Please Touch Museum. The location of the accident is part of the course for this weekend's triathlon.

He didn't have any identification on him, and authorities are still working to ID him.
