The Rules For Moving Out Your Charitable Goods

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- If you're cleaning out your closet and looking to make donations to carious charitable organizations, it seems each organization has its own rules as to what they'll accept.

Tim Raines with the Salvation Army says there's a minimum request for items if his organization makes a house call to pick up your donation.

"We would just request that they have 5 bags of clothing or a large piece of furniture or several smaller pieces of furniture, something where a truck is really warranted," Raines says.

Meanwhile, Brad Connard with the Purple Heart says his organization is asking just the opposite:

Connard says, "generally what we collect for the Purple Heart is donations of clothing and small household items."

Connard says they are not able to pick up too much per housecall, "the drivers are on the trucks by themselves and you know, just large furniture is not something that they can accommodate."

Meanwhile, the Red Cross only accepts monetary donations, and of course if you're looking to get rid of something in a pinch, there's always Craigslist.
