AP: Gov. Corbett To Nominate Correale Stevens For Pa. Supreme Court Vacancy

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett is expected to pick state appeals court Judge Correale Stevens as his nominee to temporarily fill a vacancy on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

Two people briefed on the decision by the governor's office disclosed it Thursday, insisting on anonymity to avoid divulging private conversations.

A spokesman for Corbett declined comment.

The opening was created by the May 1 resignation of Joan Orie Melvin. She was convicted of using public employees to help her political campaigns.

Stevens is currently president judge of state Superior Court, which handles criminal and civil appeals.

Stevens' long career in public service includes time as Luzerne County's district attorney, a county judge and a state representative.

Stevens is a Republican. His nomination requires two-thirds approval by the state Senate.
