Detectives Search Home Of Contractor Connected To Building Collapse
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Detectives searched the home of a general contractor hired to demolish a building that collapsed onto a thrift store in Center City Philadelphia last week, killing six people.
Investigators from the police central detectives unit went to the Nicetown home of contractor Griffin Campbell on Monday afternoon and emerged approximately 45 minutes later carrying a box.
Campbell's attorney, Kenneth Edelin, refuted claims by city officials that the city's Licenses and Inspections Department never inspected the site during demolition.
"Inspectors from OSHA, the city ... visited the site after demolition had started and gave the site a clean bill of health," Edelin said.
At least six survivors have filed lawsuits against the contractor and the building's owner. (See Related Story)
Earlier in the day on Monday, Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams announced a grand jury will be convened to investigate the deadly collapse that killed six and injured 13. (See Related Story)
Williams cautioned against a rush of judgment when it comes to the investigation in this case.
"I ask and beg the patience of all Philadelphians," Williams said.
