Philly Cab Driver Shot During Attempted Robbery

By Jim Melwert, Steve Beck

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are searching for two suspects in connection with the shooting of a cab driver in Philadelphia early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened at about 2 a.m. in the 200 block of East Hortter Street in the city's West Mount Airy section.

According to investigators, police say a driver with the Germantown Cab Company picked up two men. Police say when they arrived to Hortter Street, the suspects tried to rob the driver.

Investigators say the cab driver became involved in a struggle with the suspects and that is when one of the suspects shot the cab driver in the arm.

The two attempted robbers fled without any money.

The cabbie tried to drive himself to the emergency room, but police say he went to the old Germantown Hospital, which is no longer opened. Police found him there and drove him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where he's in stable condition.

Investigators say the cab driver is expected to recover. Detectives are speaking to the victim in hopes of getting more information about the two suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911.
