Computer Game Good For The Aging Brain

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - As we get older, brain function declines. But a recently funded government study found that while crossword puzzles did not improve skills, playing a computer game, Double Decision, can slow and even reverse declines in brain functioning.

This is how it works. Find the matching motor vehicle and road sign amidst a series of increasing distractions - shifting signs with a challenge getting quicker and harder.

Frederic Wolinsky, a lead researcher at the University of Iowa, reports on real-world benefits of playing computer games including reduction in depression. In one trial, participants who were followed for six years had a 50% lower rate of motor vehicle accidents following cognitive training.

AARP, the giant organization serving older adults, is so impressed with results of Double Decision research that it's offering discounts for several other brain games developed by the Posit Science Corporation.
