App Tracks Ownership Of Products; Helps Consumers Boycott, Support Companies

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A new app is letting people boycott or support certain companies by tracking ownership of consumer goods.

According to Forbes, the Buycott app allows users to scan products with their smartphone and receive a corporate family tree that shows the ownership of the good.

The app allows users to boycott or support specific organizations or join campaigns that, for example, boycott companies who donated money to oppose mandatory labels on genetically modified food or support companies that openly back LGBT rights.

The mastermind of the app, Ivan Pardo, says he didn't want Buycott to tell people what to buy, he wanted it to be a platform that would allow consumers to make well-informed decisions.
