Authorities Say Child Killed Before Trenton Standoff Was Stabbed

by Tim Jimenez

TRENTON, N.J., (CBS) - Authorities have identified the 12-year-old boy who, along with his mother, was found dead in a Trenton home; the site of a 37-hour long standoff with police over the weekend.

The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office says Quavon Foster was killed a little less than two weeks before what would have been his 13th birthday.

Authorities say Foster died on April 25th of multiple stab wounds to his chest.  It was that same day that police say his mother, Carmenlita Stevens, was also killed; stabbed in the chest and of blunt force trauma to her head.

Police say 38-year-old Gerald Murphy killed the mother and son, left their decomposing bodies in the home on Grand Street and kept Stevens' other children hostage for more than two weeks.

Police responded to the home on Friday, which started a standoff that lasted until early Sunday morning when authorities say they shot and killed Murphy and rescued the other children.

Still no word on a motive, but authorities say Murphy had a violent past and was a convicted sex offender.
