Philadelphia's July 4th Celebration Week Events Announced

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- No one knows how to throw a party for the nation's birthday like its birthplace.

Today, "Welcome America" organizers gathered with Mayor Nutter and other officials to announce the lineup of events and entertainment that will draw tens of thousands of people to Philadelphia between July 1st and July 7th.

The mayor announced the talent lineup for the Philly "4th of July Jam," part of the Welcome America Festival.

Hosted by The Roots, there will be performances from Demi Lovato; John Mayer; R &B superstar Ne-Yo; North Philly's own Jill Scott; Grace Potter, lead vocalist for The Nocturnals; and Ben Taylor, son of Carly Simon and James Taylor.

"You see the array of talent -- there's something for everyone," Nutter said today, highlighting the benefit to the city's economy.  "Seven days of activity.  Taste of Philadelphia on the other side now of the 4th of July, which stretches out the activity and also gets some heads in beds and some visitors and tourists here in Philadelphia. It's going to be a ball!"

The week of events also includes a parade with 5,000 participants, and free hoagies being served in front of the Independence Visitor Center lawn compliments of Wawa.
