Appreciating Teachers

By Dr. Marciene Mattleman

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - While people pay lip service to the importance of teachers, saying that they perform the most important service to kids, on scales of professions, teachers don't rate very high. Nor are they compensated for their critical role in people's lives.

John F. Kennedy perhaps said it best: "Modern cynics and skeptics see no harm in paying those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the care of their plumbing".

The Phillies, Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News do value teachers and every year the public has an opportunity to nominate favorite teachers and the ten most convincing accounts are honored on the ball field.

Who are they? Teachers who are remembered many years later; people who share their lives with their students, who see their students and families outside of school hours, teachers who make classes fun.

It's Teacher Appreciation Week. Who is your favorite teacher?
