Tractor-Trailer, Car Crash Snarls Traffic On Northeast Extension


WHITPAIN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) – One person was injured after an accident involving a tractor trailer and a car in Montgomery County early Thursday morning.

The accident happened at about 7 a.m. in the southbound lanes of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension in Whitpain Township.

As a result of the crash, the car was pushed up on its side and was pinned between the tractor trailer and the center median.

Officials report the driver of the tractor trailer, identified as 49-year-old William Kishbaugh of Wapwallopen, failed to obey posted signs instructing all trucks to use the left lane only.

Authorities say Kishbaugh lost control of the vehicle after the right front bumper struck the concrete barrier on the right shoulder. Kishbaugh veered into the left lane and hit a Honda Civic.

Investigators say the driver in the Honda, identified as 22-year-old Kristen Maehrer of Allentown, was airlifted to an area hospital. Officials say she escaped the crash with only an injury to her hip and is expected to make a full recover.

The driver of the tractor trailer also suffered injuries was was taken to Mercy Suburban Hospital in Norristown.

Traffic in the southbound lanes was shutdown for several hours, but it has since been reopened.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

No charges have been filed.
