New Jersey, New York To Get $569M In EPA Grants For Water Upgrades
NEW YORK (AP) — The federal Environmental Protection Agency is announcing $569 million in grants to New York and New Jersey for improvements to sewage treatment and drinking water facilities.
EPA officials said Thursday that $340 million in federal disaster-relief funds will be available to New York communities affected by Superstorm Sandy. There will be $229 million for New Jersey communities hit by the storm.
A report released this week by a science journalism group found that Sandy released 11 billion gallons of sewage from East Coast treatment plants into bodies of water from Washington, D.C., to Connecticut.
EPA Acting Administrator Bob Perciasepe said the funds being authorized to New York and New Jersey will help communities in those states to upgrade their water facilities so they can weather the next big storm.
