Most Stuttering Can Be Solved

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – You might be surprised to know that one out of every 20 children is a stutterer. Another interesting fact is that stuttering disappears without any treatment at all in three out of every four children. Even in those cases where it does not go away, if stuttering is addressed when children are in preschool, major strides can be made.

Early intervention with a speech pathologist, leads to improvement in 50% of cases. There are specific techniques which can help. Some famous stutterers include James Earl Jones and Winston Churchill.

Clearly, it’s not something that has to be disabling. Major changes can occur that can be a big help.
