12th Annual Free Comic Book Day This Weekend

by John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - From zombies to a sponge that lives in a pineapple under the sea. There's something for everyone at Free Comic Book Saturday on May 4th.  KYW's John McDevitt reports.

Sponge Bob Square Pants, Superman, and The Walking Dead are just some of the free comics that will be available at more than 2,000 stores participating in the 12th Annual Free Comic Book Day.

"Basically all the publishers get together with the comic stores around the country and they provide us with some new, low cost comics that we can then give away for free to anyone who shows up during that day," said Robert LaFever, manager of Brave New Worlds Comics on North 2nd Street in Old City.

"If you look at the demographics of comic readers, they're getting older and older and older.  So we want to try and get some fresh blood, some younger readers," said LaFever.

Many participating stores will have comic book characters greeting visitors.

"We're going to have somebody dressed as Marceline from Adventure Time.  I think we are going to have a Deadpool who is a popular Marvel character and who knows who else will show up," said LaFever.
