Union Owners Meet Today With Goal Of Expanding PPL Park

By David Madden

CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) - There could be some changes coming to the home of the Philadelphia Union. Owners of the Major Soccer League franchise will meet today to discuss expansion plans.

PPL Park opened about four years ago amidst a lot of ballyhoo. And to hear CEO Nick Sakiewicz tell it things are going well. So well, in fact, they're looking to add to the seating now in place at the Chester stadium for corporate clients and the like.

"We're looking at club seats for sure, which would require more restaurant square footage. We have one restaurant in the building right now. We'll probably look at what it's going to take and what it's going to cost to build a second one."

Don't expect to see a lot of work right now. They don't want to get in the way of the close-to-sellout crowds for home games scheduled through October. But come next year, the place may look different.

CEO Nick Sakiewich says one thing that won't change is the scenic view.

"If you've ever been to PPL Park on a nice day and have seen that river and that beautiful bridge in the backdrop, there's nothing like it in sports."

The stadium is built for 60 club seats. There are 30 now. Adding general seating -- at least right now -- is not in the plans. But, the infrastructure can handle as many as 30,000 fans.
