VP Biden To Get Pennsylvania Society Medal
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden, who had a boyhood home in Scranton, will receive the Pennsylvania Society's Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement.
Society president Jim Nevels said Wednesday that a sitting vice president has never won the award in the society's 115-year history. It'll be presented Dec. 14 at the society's traditional annual holiday dinner in New York City.
Previous medal recipients include Andrew Carnegie, Dwight Eisenhower, Andrew Wyeth, Bill Cosby, James Michener and George H.W. Bush.
Nevels says the society's council decided at last week's meeting in Gettysburg to give the award to Biden because he is a Pennsylvanian who has helped shape world events for decades.
Before he became vice president in 2009, Biden served 36 years as a U.S. senator from Delaware.
