DNA Evidence Helps Solve 1996 Cold Case Murder In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are crediting DNA evidence with identifying the suspect allegedly responsible for a 1996 cold case.

The announcement came just hours after a man confessed to a 1990 murder in New Jersey that had also remained unsolved.

On Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1996 around 2:45 a.m., police responded to the 1700 block of Hope Street, where they found the body of Anjeanette Maldonado.

During the investigation, Philadelphia police were able to match DNA obtained during the murder investigation to that of the DNA profile of a convicted felon from Florida.

On Monday, April 1, 2013, 46-year-old Rafael Crespo was officially charged with Rape, Murder, Sexual Assault and related offenses for the murder of Maldonado.

Crespo is currently in jail in Bowling Green, Florida.
