Local Charity Turning Spring Cleaning Trash Into Treasure

By Michelle Durham

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Spring is here, even though you can't really tell because of all the chilly weather! This is the time of year when we traditionally clean out our closets and purge the items we no longer need or use.

One local charity is hoping those items will wind up in their custody so they can use them to help others.

Goodwill Spokesperson Juli Lundberg says spring cleaning is good for the heart and if you donate the items to a good cause, such as theirs, it's good for your soul too!

"It absolutely is! January...the colder months...we see donations drop. Taxes went up. Gas prices rose. Donations did drop and we are seeing more shoppers in our stores trying to stretch their dollars. Spring cleaning season is really critical," Lundberg explains.

She says all of the proceeds go to fund job training programs to put disabled folks to work.

They are accepting everything, from clothing and house wares, to medical supplies such as canes and wheelchairs; it's easy to donate.

"To donate you can come to any of our donation centers. All of our donation centers are manned by courteous personnel who will help you unload and provide you with a receipt for tax purposes," says Lundberg.
