PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There were roses in evergreens at the Flower Show. The fact that it was an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ exhibit should have been the first clue it was a fantasy. They were cut roses that had been carefully positioned in the shrubs. Which you could do for a party perhaps, but real roses don’t grow like that. Now, you can plant rose bushes in front of boxwoods or hollies to contrast the red flowers against a deep green background, but it won’t look exactly like the fantasy where they seemed to be growing out of the shrubs.
The point is, don’t get frustrated trying to replicate the impossible. While there are tons of great ideas and horticultural feats on display at the Flower Show, there’s also plenty of flower arranging. So, give yourself a break when you garden at home, and remember, no matter how pretty and inspiring the display, things don’t always really grow that way.
